Ari Lennox Dreamville Departure Rumors Hint at Bigger Changes Within the Label

Written by on April 26, 2025

Following the release of Ari Lennox’s new single “Soft Girl Energy,” fans noticed only Interscope Records was listed as the label, prompting TMZ to report that the singer had parted ways with Dreamville. However, those with knowledge of the situation share that it isn’t so cut and dry. Lennox remains affiliated with J. Cole’s imprint, and the relationship appears to be positive. What potentially appears to be shifting, however, is the joint venture between Dreamville and Interscope.

Lennox, who performed at the fifth and final Dreamville Festival earlier this month, publicly thanked Cole “for making my dreams a reality,” signaling that there’s no bad blood. While she’s voiced frustrations in the past about label infrastructure, she’s also benefited from the partnership: her debut album Shea Butter Baby is RIAA-certified gold, and its title track is now platinum. Over the years, she’s racked up multiple nominations from the BET, NAACP and Soul Train Music Awards.

She’s not the only one navigating a changing system. Dreamville artist Cozz recently told EBONY at Dreamville Fest that he’s no longer under Interscope and has since been releasing music independently, often via YouTube. Other artists on the roster, Omen, Lute and Bas are also signed directly to Dreamville, and EarthGang dropped their latest album through Larry Jackson’s gamma. With a growing number of artists on the roster now operating independently, via direct deals with Dreamville or through new distribution partners, a fair question is raised: What’s going on with the Dreamville/Interscope joint venture?

While the finer details remain under wraps, the direction is clear—something’s shifting.

With J. Cole teasing The Fall Off as his final album and Dreamville Fest seemingly closing a chapter (and starting a new one), it’s fair to ask: What’s next? Is this the sunset of an era, or simply a reset? If Cole is following the blueprint of his mentor and former label head Jay-Z, who evolved beyond Def Jam and Roc-A-Fella into Roc Nation, then Dreamville might just be shedding its old skin to enter a more autonomous, forward-thinking phase. A move toward more autonomy could allow the brand to operate with greater flexibility, ownership and global reach—one that isn’t tethered to a single distribution partner or artist identity.

Whether it’s a cultural pivot or a long-game strategy, Dreamville’s next chapter is being written in real time and fans are watching closely.
